Green Eyes

This is my most recent song – I’ve detailed its meaning in previous posts so I won’t go into too much depth here. Suffice to say, its a song about jealousy (hence the title). We’ve all been there – you see an old friend, or ex, or family member and it seems their life is going so much better than yours. You feel embarrassed talking about what you’ve been up to in your life.

This song was written in an alternate tuning, albeit a simple one. The G string is tuned down to E. I was doing a cover of Tenerife Sea by Ed Sheeran which uses this tuning, and I started messing about with different chords. Green Eyes is the result. The melodies are yet to be finalised, and my playing is less than stellar on this particular recording, but that’s what this blog is about – I want you to see the progression of the songs from rough demos to finished arrangements. I hope you like it.

I never thought I’d see you here

Well you haven’t changed a bit although it seems to be clear

That life has taken us our separate ways

I look at you and I can see

All the many different things I guess that I’ll never be

Your face a clock that’s rolling back the days

How are you?

We met so many years ago, its really really nice to see you

Here’s my truth

I lost my focus years ago

And where its gone I swear that I don’t know

You’re everything you want to be

Yeah you really made a go of it compared to me

I’m really glad that you turned out ok

I’m damaged goods and I bear the weight

The weight of every single god damn motherfucking mistake

I’ve slavishly collected on the way

How are you?

We met so many years ago its really really great to see you

Here’s my truth

I lost my pride a while ago

Will I ever get it back? Well I don’t know

And if you looked across a crowded street and saw me

Would you say hello or would you just ignore me?

Ashamed of what I am I think I’d try and blank you

When really what I ought to do is come and thank you

For being part of my life

How are you?

We met so many years ago, it really shook me up to see you

Here’s my truth

I lost the will so long ago

Will I ever get it back well I don’t know
