Blue

This is another old Red Dust Road song. Its a very simple, bright, optimistic love song. At the time I wrote it I was kicking against everything that my dour, pessimistic metal bands had stood for. I wanted the total opposite; a true fresh start. I’ve had several songs called Blue over the years, always with the same lyrical themes. I just liked the image of being into someone so much that a simple smile could change your whole day. It wasn’t written about anyone in particular; just a universal love song. This version is actually played a semitone lower than the Red Dust Road version – I realised I was straining my voice a little in the original so this works better.

There have been times

When my faith has eroded and all that I’m left with is doubt

There have been times

When all I want is a way out

To see her smile is to pull the clouds from the sky and let in the sun

Its all worthwhile, and I cannot believe there is more to come

‘Cause I don’t need anybody else in my life

But a girl with a smile that can light the world for you

No I don’t need anyone except for the girl

Who with one little smile can banish the clouds

And turn the sky blue

There have been times

When my will has imploded and all that I’m left with is doubt

There have been times

When all I want is to get out

To hear her laughing is to throw all your troubles away and discover the light

The things that I’ve seen on this beautiful day got me feeling right

‘Cause I don’t need anybody else in my life

But a girl with a smile that can light the world for you

No I don’t need anyone except for the girl

Who with one little smile can banish the clouds

And turn the sky blue

The things that I’ve seen

On this beautiful day

The things that I’ve seen

Got me feeling OK

‘Cause I don’t need anybody else in my life

But a girl with a smile that can light the world for you

No I don’t need anyone except for the girl

Who with one little smile can banish the clouds

And turn the sky blue
